Whenever any living space is in a basement (especially a bedroom) making sure that proper egress locations are available is very important. It could save lives.
So, say that your basement already has an egress window or an exterior door. Is there anything else that you need to keep in mind to keep you and your family safe?
One thing to keep in mind is obstructions – both interior and exterior. Too many times we see obstructions that can be a safety issue during our inspections.
On the interior, we often find an egress window blocked with personal items, countertops, newly built additions, and more. This might make it difficult or even impossible to get to the egress point in an emergency.
When it comes to the exterior, the most common obstruction is a deck, but also patios, furniture, and more. These might have been built after the basement was finished and the builder might not have had knowledge of what was getting blocked. So keep your family safe, and your basement egresses free of blockages.
